The "53 Stations of the Tokaido Road" is Hiroshige's trademark series. Hiroshige masterfully captured the average person's experience of the Japanese landscape as well as the varied moods of memorable places at different times. In this print, we see waitresses from competing inns along the main street of the town struggling to drag the last weary traveler of the day into their establishments. In the background, we see a cutaway view of one of the inns, where another traveler has already retired and is enjoying a hot foot bath after the long day's journey.
