More Information
The painting depicts a fragmented gathering space with multiple levels, chairs, endless staircases and partial rooms. In this space, people explore, inhabit and modify it to accommodate human needs over time. Thin black lines slice through the painted surface and literally fragment the canvas into multiple sections, suggesting that the painting's spaces can still be redefined.

This environment is reminiscent of Beardshear Hall and how its space, and perception of space, has changed according to campus needs throughout the building's hundred year existence. Named for William Bearshear (President, Iowa State College, 1891-1902) the building was once used as a classroom and library and now houses administrative and student services offices.
