One common ancient drinking vessel is called a "patella" cup. The name is derived from the Greek word meaning "to drink".

The most expensive patella cups were produced in glass. Cups of this type and shape were made in both monochrome and mosaic glass, and derive their shape from earlier metalwork and pottery types.
